Celebrating Read Across America Week
Every year, during the first week of March (March 2nd - March 8th), readers across the country come together to celebrate Read Across America Week—a nationwide movement dedicated to fostering a love of reading in children and adults alike. But where did this beloved tradition begin, and why is it so important? Let’s dive into the history, impact, and ways you can join in the celebration!
The History of Read Across America
Read Across America was launched in 1998 by the National Education Association (NEA) to promote the importance of literacy and encourage children to develop a lifelong love of books. The event originally coincided with Dr. Seuss’s birthday (March 2nd), honoring his lasting influence on children's literature.
Over time, Read Across America has evolved to highlight diverse books, authors, and stories that reflect the experiences of all children. Today, the initiative continues to champion literacy by providing educators, families, and communities with resources to make reading a fun and meaningful part of everyday life.
Why Read Across America Matters
Reading is more than just a skill—it’s a gateway to knowledge, creativity, and connection. Studies show that children who are read to from a young age develop stronger vocabulary, comprehension, and critical thinking skills. Plus, reading together strengthens bonds between parents, caregivers, and children, creating moments of joy and discovery.
By celebrating Read Across America, we remind children (and adults!) that books are more than words on a page—they are invitations to explore new worlds, dream big, and see themselves in the stories they read.
